Today we commenced our walk from Les Forges d’Abel approximately 5 kilometres from Col do Somport (the crossing point in The Pyrenees into Spain). The walk was uphill all the way climbing around 600meters over the 5 kilometres.
We started in clouds and ended with spectacular mountain views.
At the Col we were able to get coffee and a stamp for our credential before heading down the other side to Canfranc Estation where we are staying in a nice hotel. Hopefully the beds will be better than last night where the mattress were nothing but springs and nobody had a good nights sleep.
On the way down we followed the Rio Aragon on rough tracks that were not at all pleasant. The highlight of the descent was forcing our way through a flock of sheep.
The restored Canfranc Estation (now a 5 star hotel) is an unbelievable building situated in a very narrow valley and was the main access into Spain from France until 1929 when a bridge collapsed on the French side which closed the railway line. The Estation is now a tourist destination all year round as the area provides walking activities as well as skiing in the winter months.
