Last night we had a meal with Jen and Dave at our favourite bar (La Fragua de Vulcano) before retiring early and well ahead of the Madrid crowds who like to party all night.

Today we commenced our Camino de Madrid. While the Camino starts at the Church of St James and John the Baptist we chose to take a train to Fuencarral and avoid eleven kilometres of walking through the suburban streets of Madrid. This reduced our walk for the day to 12 kilometres instead of 23.

As it was to be a short day we arranged to meet at the Sol train estacion at 10:30am. This required negotiating the ever increasing piles of rubbish in the streets as well as cutting across the path of the Madrid marathon without upsetting the runners who had been on the pavement for over four hours.

The walk was initially past Fuencarral cemetery followed by fields of oats until we crossed the rail line and were confined to a corridor between the rail line and a major road. This latter section was not unpleasant as the path was hedged with Holm Oaks and wildrose bushes. In the background were the snow covered Sierra de Guadarrama which we will have to cross in three days time.

On arriving in Tres Cantos we located our accommodation and were checked in by one of Basil Fwaltys Spanish relations. Tres Cantos is a modern satellite city of 50,000 and is the home to many research and development companies.

The remainder of the day was spent catching up on our washing and finding somewhere to eat as most places were either too far away or closed for the Sunday afternoon.
